Norman Bates: Teen Heartthrob?
Despite his iconic place in film history as one of the scariest characters in film history, he was cast in the role of Norman Bates in order to fool unsuspecting audiences. His sensitive, little boy lost image was created in the film Friendly Persuasion (which earned Perkins an Oscar Nomination), secured with his role as Jimmy Piersall in Fear Strikes Out, and repeated in films such as The Lonely Man, Tin Star, On the Beach, and The Tall Man. By the time Perkins was cast in Hitchcock's Psycho, he was described by the master of suspense as "the bobbysoxers dreamboat". Take a look at a rare interview with Mike Wallace while he was starring on Broadway in Look Homeward Angel.
Introducing Tippi Hedren
Model Tippi Hedren was introduced to audiences as the star of The Birds with this magazine cover. Considering the way the bird is more prominent than the star, the later tensions between star and director should have been expected.
Joan Fontaine in Magazines
The attached are some of the imaging created for Joan Fontaine early in her career, before Hitchcock got a chance to work with her Rebecca and Suspicion.
Below is the image she and Hitchcock created. Who does she remind you of?
